The Basics
The model behind short drama apps is simple. Very short vertical episodes are what you watch. You get the first few for free. Later ones need coins or a pass. Most confusion stems from that split. These five answers are the place to start.
What counts as a short drama app?
It is an app that streams vertical video built for phones. Many short episodes make up each series. The leaders are ReelShort, DramaBox, ShortMax and My Drama. Billionaires, revenge and identity reveals are popular plot ingredients. Popular too are werewolf romances. The format started dramasonline.org/series/connor-reed-the-most-powerful-arms-dealer out in China, under the name duanju.
How long does each episode run?
Most come in at one to two minutes. Productions in the West often aim for 60 to 100 seconds. Usually, a series contains 20 to 100 episodes. ReelShort lists 90 installments for Married at First Sight. ReelShort’s hit Double Life series lists 60. A complete series can be as long as a movie.
Why do episodes end on cliffhangers?
That is usually the point where free episodes end. ReelShort notes that the first 5 to 15 are usually free. Industry coverage gives a figure of 8 to 10. The paywall tends to land at peak suspense. That timing is precisely the business model. Viewers also rank it among their top complaints.
Who are the owners of ReelShort, DramaBox and My Drama?
ReelShort belongs to Crazy Maple Studio based in Sunnyvale, California. That studio is backed by China’s COL Group. Singapore’s StoryMatrix, part of Beijing Dianzhong Technology, runs DramaBox. My Drama is a Holywater product, and Holywater was founded in Kyiv in 2020. October 2025 is when Fox Entertainment acquired an equity stake. ReelShort launched in 2022, and DramaBox followed in 2023.
Can I watch in a web browser or on TV?
Yes, though there are limits. My Drama offers an Apple TV app. We found no verified ReelShort TV app at all. ReelShort’s website supports Google, Facebook, Apple, TikTok and email logins. Your viewing progress syncs with the app. You can get free unlocks only in the app.
What It Costs
The most common questions are about money. Figures are US App Store prices as of September 2026. They vary by country, platform and promotion. Always start by checking the pricing screen. Consider every number approximate. The listings show the following.
Is ReelShort free?
Partly, and the free portion is genuine. Anyone searching “is reel short free” or “is reel short app free” is after the catch. The download costs nothing. The opening episodes cost nothing. Later ones need coins or a VIP pass. Watching ads and checking in gets you free coins.
How do coins work?
Episodes are unlocked with coins, the in-app currency. According to ReelShort’s blog, an episode costs roughly 60 coins. Its smallest pack offers 500 coins for roughly $4.99. Bigger packs include extra coins. One rewarded ad unlocks two episodes. A 7-day check-in streak gets you 100+ coins.
Do coins ever expire?
That depends on the app. ReelShort says free reward coins usually run out. Coins you paid for do not run out. My Drama does things differently. Its terms void coins after 12 months of inactivity. Keep active and use reward coins first.
How much is a weekly pass?
In the US, the usual price is roughly $19.99 a week. You will see it listed by ReelShort, ShortMax, DramaWave, GoodShort and My Drama. Some apps offer cheaper options. ShortMax lists $9.99, while GoodShort starts at about $5.99. All these passes renew automatically. Forgetting it for four weeks costs four times as much.
Can I get a monthly or yearly plan?
They exist on some apps. A yearly plan is listed on ReelShort’s blog at about $199.99. Different pages give different monthly prices. So that figure remains unconfirmed. About $36.99 a month is what DramaWave lists. ShortMax displays only weekly passes in the US.
Can I watch without paying?
Yes, if you are patient. To begin, watch each series’ free first episodes. Open up more by watching rewarded ads. Maintain a daily check-in streak. There are also official ReelShort channels on YouTube, TikTok and Dailymotion. All four combined go furthest.
Managing and Cancelling Subscriptions
A weekly pass keeps renewing until you stop it. Plenty of people are surprised by that. Once you know where to go, cancelling is quick. Where you cancel depends on how you paid. Store purchases are cancelled through the store. Website purchases are handled by the company.
Does deleting the app cancel the subscription?
No, and it is a common mistake. According to Apple, deleting an app does not end its subscription. Google says the same of uninstalling. That warning is repeated in My Drama’s terms. Your pass keeps renewing until you cancel it. Cancel first, and then delete.
How do I cancel on an iPhone?
First, open the Settings app. Next, tap your name at the top. Then choose Subscriptions. Select the short drama app from the list. Tap Cancel and confirm it. To be on the safe side, act a day before renewal.
How can I cancel on Android?
Begin by opening the Google Play Store app. Then open your Subscriptions list. Find the drama app there and select it. Tap Cancel and work through the prompts. Uninstalling, remember, cancels nothing. Check the list once more to confirm the change.
Can I cancel from inside the app?
Sometimes, but the store path is the safer bet. ShortMax’s terms mention an in-app option under About Subscription. Those terms send store buyers to App Store or Google Play. Only what Apple and Google billed is under their control. If you bought on the website, reach out to the company. Screenshot every cancellation.
Why was I charged once a free trial ended?
The way trials are worded can be confusing. The developer of ShortMax concedes that its “free trial” and “24 hours free” labels confused people. According to its terms, passes renew 24 hours before expiry. The renewal costs the same price. Cancel a day before any trial runs out. Then check that the store shows it as cancelled.
Getting Refunds
The refund route depends on who took your money. Play charges are handled by Google. App Store charges are handled by Apple. Website charges are handled by the companies. None of these routes guarantees a refund. This table maps each path.
| Where you bought | How you cancel | Refund route | Things to watch |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone (App Store) | Settings, your name, Subscriptions, Cancel | Apple’s Report a Problem site | Removing the app does not cancel |
| Android (Google Play) | Google Play, Subscriptions, Cancel | Google within 48 hours, later the developer | Uninstalling alone does not cancel |
| Website | Your account or support at the app company | The app company only | Frequently non-refundable, per My Drama’s terms |
How do I get a refund from Apple?
Start at Apple’s Report a Problem page. Sign in with the Apple ID that paid. Choose the charge and explain briefly. Apple usually replies within 24 to 48 hours. The decision is Apple’s, not the app maker’s. Also cancel the pass, or it renews.
How do Google Play refunds work?
What matters most here is timing. Within 48 hours of purchase, Google says you may get a refund. Go directly through Google Play to request it. When that window is over, contact the developer. ReelShort directs users to Profile, then Feedback. When a renewal surprises you, act fast.
What about buying on the website?
Those purchases go through the app company. Apple and Google can’t step in there. My Drama’s terms label web purchases non-refundable except where law requires. EU and UK users get a 14-day withdrawal right under its terms. Each other company sets its own rules. Before paying online, read the terms.
Is it possible to refund unused coins?
Usually not, and the terms make that clear. My Drama’s terms call coin purchases final. ShortMax refuses refunds unless its own fault makes a product unusable. A store request may help with accidental buys. Buy the smallest pack until a series hooks you. Then mistakes cost you less.
Safety and Look-Alike Apps

Confusion over names is everywhere here. Misspelled names send you to little-known unrelated apps. A few of the downloads are unsafe. Certain sites copy big brands. Your money is protected by using real names. The answers below sort real from fake.
Is Real Short an actual app?
No, not that we could locate. Real Short is a misspelled version of ReelShort. That applies to “real short app”, “realshot”, “reel shot” and likely “shot shorts” too. The real name is one word, not two. On the App Store, its seller is New Leaf Publishing. Before downloading, check that.
What are ReelBox, DailyShort and GoldShort TV, exactly?
They are small apps, and they are unrelated. ReelBox, found through “reel box” or “reelbox tv”, counts 50K+ Android installs. There is no link between it and ReelShort or DramaBox. DailyShort, often typed “daily short”, shows 100K+ installs. With 10K+ installs, GoldShort TV is an Android TV app. GoodShort is probably what most searchers mean.
Are ShortTV and ShortMax the same app?
Very likely, though not confirmed. ShortMax’s legal entity is SHORTTV LIMITED in Hong Kong. Visitors to its website land on ShortTV’s site. Each launched in September 2023. We could not find an official rename announcement. Searching “short tv” or “short max” also surfaces unrelated apps.
Is it safe to use mod APKs and coin generators?
No, and not one is official. A mod APK is an altered app copy from outside official stores. One look-alike of DramaBox calls its download an unofficial modified version. Coin generators are not official either. There is no way for you to verify what they do. Stay with official stores and websites.
Why is ReelShort rated low on Trustpilot?
ReelShort’s Trustpilot page lists 1.3 out of 5 from 250 reviews. Charges after cancelling are a recurring complaint. Complaints about weekly auto-renewals come up often. Others raise coin prices and denied refunds. Any review site reflects those who chose to post. Read it as a list of things to check rather than a final verdict.
